12 beautiful winter photos of Helsinki

Last weekend, I made a little trip to Helsinki central Park which happens to be located very close to my home. The park looked magical under the bright January sun but I hardly lasted half an hour out there, thanks to the numbing cold. If you didn’t know, the park is the best place to try cross-country skiing in Helsinki. You can also experience horse riding there. I saw a lot of ski enthusiasts enjoying the sunny day. If you are wondering, I can’t ski even to save my life. Besides, it was -18 degree Celcius. Although I have seen the mercury dropping as low as -28 degrees in Helsinki before, it was still too cold to change lenses. So I settled for the kit lens which I think did a pretty good job. I have a good zoom lens but I need to invest in a good landscape lens. *Note to self-buy that damn lens. I am sharing  12 beautiful Helsinki winter photos in this post which I think are truly mesmerising.

Next month, I will be completing four years of living in Helsinki. However, I am still not sure if I love the Finnish winter like I am supposed to. Finnish winter is harsh, bitter and too long to bear, especially during the polar nights season. But you got to fall in love with the rare sunny, bright and snowy days. During winters, I desperately want to get away to someplace warm but the beautiful Helsinki weather makes me go ‘aww’. Then I just can’t help getting out and taking pictures.

As we are approaching February which is undoubtedly my favourite month of the year, I am beginning to love these winter days. February days are very bright. The snow shining under the sun makes everything look so magical. Before you judge me, February is still very much wintry in Finland. Then we have to wait till May in this part of the world to hear the spring birds sing. But finally the winter darkness is over. Now is the time for enjoying this short window of sunny and beautiful days before everything turns gloomy again; in tiring anticipation of spring.

Basically, March and April can kill your spirit and you are almost convinced that the beautiful spring days will never arrive. But until spring, we have to make the best out of this harsh Finnish winter. Thank god, we have cameras to feel better about it. I really enjoyed taking these Heslinki winter photos. I hope you will enjoy them as well.
