Finnair Skywheel: Helsinki Landmarks

Ever since the bright and crisp Spring days have arrived in the city, I have been on a wandering spree. From discovering new walking trails hidden right in the heart of the city to exploring the unmistakable city landmarks, I am making it a point to make these short days of Sping count. Which is why I decided to go visit the places I have been meaning to go for a quite long time and Finnair skywheel being one of the most iconic landmarks in the city had to be explored.

It may not be a very old city structure but it has definitely become an identification mark of Helsinki within a very short span of time.

The wheel looks small from a distance but you just can’t miss it as it is a permanent part of the Helsinki cityscape. The height of the wheel is about 40 meters (which is huge) and would be about one-third of the London eye. But I am not complaining. I believe, the nature of the land on which it’s located had something to do with its height.

From its base, the structure looks so huge and inviting that you would definitely want to go up and feel its enormity. From my personal experience, I would say that the height feels just fine from the insides of the protective gondola casings even for those scared of height.

The 360-degree view from Finnair skywheel wheel is spectacular and you feel so small. Look North and you will see the pulsating city with the unmistakable White church standing tall. Divert your gaze to the left, you will see a black one. It is called the Upsenski Cathedral, another must-visit place in Helsinki.

Our ride was about 12 minutes long and I was thankful that the wheel moves slowly. Have I ever mentioned that I have Tachophobia? No? Alright, it’s the fear of speed. Now you know how to kill me!

Anyhow, I just wish the duration of the ride was longer because I could easily spend at least half an hour admiring the sea and the tiny looking boats.

Also, if you think you can’t handle height you can still go and sit in their terrace cafe to enjoy the view. A Glass of a cooler and the sea are a great combination!

Located at Katajanokka harbor in central Helsinki, the wheel is very convenient to reach, open all year round, and has room for about 240 visitor. The best part is, it is accessible to people with physical challenges.

I read it somewhere that Finnair skywheel  was constructed at this spot as a tribute to the time when the airline first started its operations close to this area. There is a separate VIP box with glass floors where one can enjoy a very private ride while sipping Champaign. It is black in colour whereas the rest of the 29 boxes are white with blue tinted glasses.

Is it to make the sea look bluer?? Just a passing thought.

Whatever it is, photos from the top look a bit bluish and I haven’t added any kind of filter. Hope you enjoy the photo gallery.

The Finnair Skywheel is a lot of fun! The terrace looks inviting, I should go one of these days, as it’s quite near my work!

Yes. The terrace is one of the best spots in Helsinki to enjoy a drink 🙂
