Something fishy!

I raked my brained thinking of a name for this easy fish recipe but couldn’t find a suitable one. This is totally an experimental dish and I used everything I could lay my hands on. The fish I used here is an arctic fish and I don’t know its name. But I guess it is perfectly alright for us to use any kind of fish for this dish.

The plus points? Minimal prep time and it’s a healthy alternative to spicy fish curries. Honestly speaking, I bought a lot of this fish and by the end of the week I still had some left. By this time, I was fed up of making curries and frying this fish.

Hence, I had to think something fresh. Now, baking fish wrapped in banana leaves is a common practice in the North-Eastern parts of India and we Assamese and Bangalis┬ájust love our ‘bhaapa’ fish. The result was, this easy fish recipe that I baked in just half an hour.

But not going into the details of such yummy recipes, I would like to present my very own version.

Let’s see how I made it-


  1. Fish 250 grams
  2. One small onion, chopped (I cut mine in rings)
  3. Green chilies (as much as you like but I recommend using 2)
  4. Half of a fresh lemon or store bought concentrate
  5. Mustard oil, (about one or half teaspoon) remember it’s a must
  6. Mustard powder or ground mustard (about one teaspoon)
  7. Fresh coriander leaves or freshly ground coriander powder
  8. Soy sauce (half teaspoon)
  9. White vinegar (a few drops)
  10. Salt to taste
  11. Turmeric powder (one teaspoon)


  1. First cut and clean the fish if it’s not cut and cleaned. If you don’t want to smell like fish then buy it from the super market
  2. Rub salt and turmeric powder onto the fishes
  3. Then coat the fishes with mustard oil
  4. leave it for about ten minutes
  5. Add chopped green chilies, chopped coriander, and mustard powder
  6. Mix well and add soy sauce and vinegar
  7. Transfer the whole mixture onto a silver foil
  8. Finally mix the onions or just put it on top
  9. Drizzle fresh lemon/lime juice all over
  10. Seal the silver foil in the shape of a zip lock bag
  11. And put it in the oven for 12-15 minutes at 200 degrees
  12. Carefully open the foil as it would be full of steam and you don’t want to burn yourself
  13. Now open the foil and put it back in the oven for another 5 minute
  14. And voila, your baked fish is ready

This dish is served best with steaming rice and yellow lentils tempered with Indian spices. But you can try eating it with flatbreads.
