Exploring Helsinki’s tea scene: Demmers Teehaus

Despite being a self-proclaimed coffee addict, I have practically grown up on tea and my days do not start without a strong cup of black tea. But more than the drink, I have grown up admiring the rituals associated with tea, especially the British tea ceremonies.

Back home tea is one of the ways of life and we, the Assamese, just cannot do without our tea be it in the morning or the late hours of the night. For those not aware, Assam is one of the largest tea growing regions in the world and Assam tea is best admired by all.

But when I came to Helsinki, knowing the fact that Finland is one of the biggest coffee consuming nations, I bought my year long supply of Assam tea along with me. This might sound funny, but better safe than sorry!

Now, that the supply is fast depleting, it made me wonder about the possibilities of getting some good quality Assam tea in Helsinki. A brief search later, I was introduced to the city’s hidden tea scene as if someone had just lifted the veil. Embarking on the tea hunt a couple of days back, I found little tea houses strewn all over the city and this little place on Annankatu being my first stop simply won me over.

Although a franchise of the international chain DEMMERS TEEHAUS, this cozy little shop has a personal touch of its owner Kirsi, a former employee of a corporate giant. She welcomed me with a warm smile and soon we got on discussing the tea scene of the city of Coffee lovers.

The fact that Kirsi has been running the shop very successfully for over 6 years only proves that the Finns admire tea too even though it’s not as much as they love their coffee.

Not only this shop has innumerable varieties of tea from different parts of the world but also houses beautiful tee accesories, chocolates and other related products. One can also taste some tea at the shop before buying any. To my delight, Kirsi told me that she stores about 7-8 varieties of Assam tea.

Being the nice person that she is, Kirsi even treated me with their special Matcha Ice Tea. Honestly speaking, I have never been a fan of green tea but this one with green apples, ginger and agave syrup tasted just right. Bio-tea with no sugar sounds just perfect! Sadly, she was out of stock at that moment and I couldn’t buy any.

I am definitely going back to get it. I had been dying to find some good quality ice tea in Helsinki.

P.S: This is not a paid post. All opinions expressed here are my own. Although I am very grateful to Kirsi Pullinen for her time.

Nice, I haven’t heard about this one! Such a delightful place. Matcha ice tea sounds very interesting. I love macha frappucinos and indulge in them whenever in Asia. But I think those are very far from traditional tea culture, LOL!

Ha ha..yes, far from the traditional. Nothing beats the classic black tea with some cakes to go with. But this particular Matcha ice tea was too good to resist ๐Ÿ™‚
